Woodland Elementary's annual program salutes military veterans

Woodland kindergartners follow music teacher Douglas Lizak’s direction during a “Stars and Stripes” flag routine.

Students at Woodland Elementary School waved small American flags and sang their hearts our Friday afternoon in a salute to military veterans.

An entire side of the gym was filled with parents and grandparents, several of them veterans. As they entered for the annual program they saw colorful “thank you” drawings posted along the walls.

“Veterans, this program is a gift for you from our students,” said Douglas Lizak, general music teacher and director of the program.

After an opening procession by the Mansfield Police Department color guard, third-graders led the singing of the Star Spangled Banner.

Kindergarten children waved small American flags and twirled about as they followed LIzak’s direction in a “Stars and Stripes” flag routine. That was followed by first-graders singing “Yankee Doodle,” second-graders singing “Proud of our Veterans,” and third-graders offering “This is My Country” with Kaylen Brooks as featured soloist.

Student speakers included Vanness Oliver, Isreal Martin, Ayrianah Jenkins, Nylah Lindsay and Zaebriana Bentley.

The program concluded with all grades joining to sing “Grand Old Flag,”

Principal Bethany Scott praised Lizak’s organization of the program.

“He did a really nice job. He put a lot of work into it,” she said. “The kids did a very nice job too. Woodland is proud to recognize and thank our veterans."
