Dayspring residents enjoy Sherman students

Third-graders from Sherman Elementary School join residents of Dayspring Assisted Living Center for soft drinks and potato chips as part of their holiday celebration Friday morning.

Students from Sherman Elementary School brought holiday cheer to Richland County’s Dayspring Assisted Living Center Friday.

Thirty-four members of the Third-Grade Leadership Group sang Christmas songs, then distributed candy and cards and ornaments they made for Dayspring residents. The students also sat at tables to join residents for soft drinks, potato chips and conversation.

Teacher Kevin Stone said the leadership group meets every Thursday during recess.

“The kids have been working on the songs since October,” Stone said. “They sold potato chips to earn the money for the things they brought to Dayspring today.”

Wearing bright orange shirts, the students sang several Christmas songs, including “Jingle Bells,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” “Silent Night,” and “Reindeer Hokey Pokey.” Residents joined in the singing.

Ventriloquist Mackenzie Bart, Miss Ohio 2014, delighted residents and students alike as she and “Roxie,” her ventriloquist figure, sang several numbers. Among them was Disney’s Mary Poppins’ “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” which earned Bart the top talent award at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City.

Friday’s visit was the first of four the Sherman third-graders will make to Dayspring. They will return for celebrations around Valentine’s Day and Easter, then join residents for a picnic in May.
