No quorum Tuesday; board will meet Thursday

Senior High sophomore Paige Gutai on violin and junior Colin Henley on viola perform “The Star Spangled Banner” at the board of education meeting room Tuesday evening.

The Mansfield City Schools Board of Education will meet in special session at 5 p.m. on Thursday (Nov. 20) at the Raemelton administration building, 856 W. Cook Road.

The board’s scheduled regular meeting on Tuesday evening could not be held because of a lack of a quorum. Only board president Renda Cline and vice president Dina Davis were able to attend.

While no official business could be conducted, Cline said three scheduled presentations would proceed.

Superintendent Brian Garverick recognized Mansfield Senior High School junior Colin Henley, viola, and sophomore Paige Gutai, violin, for their selection to the Ohio Central Regional Orchestra. This is the second year for both to be chosen.

Gutai and Henley performed two pieces Tuesday evening, including “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Henley was awarded first chair viola in the Central Regional Orchestra, qualifying him for participation in the All-State Orchestra in February at the Ohio Music Educators Association convention. He also has been selected as a member of the viola section of the prestigious Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, which also will perform at OMEA. Senior High orchestra instructor Alicia Tremmel said the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra is comprised of the very top high school instrumentalists in the state.

Garverick also recognized the Spanish Immersion School for its recent designation as an Ohio School of Promise. The award, a result of the school’s outstanding 2014 state report card, was announced by Dr. Richard A. Ross, state superintendent of public instruction.

Senior High business teacher Virginia Groff was recognized as the recipient of a recent proclamation from Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel for her classroom work to promote financial literacy.

Using a software program provided by Richland Bank, Groff has supplemented her classroom instruction in a wide range of personal finance topics, including savings, banking, credit cards, interest rates and insurance.
