Middle school wrestlers excel in tournaments

Winter break was a lot more than tinsel and cookies for the Mansfield Middle School wrestling team.

The young Tygers placed second in the eight-team Jack Leeder Orrville Invitational on Dec. 20 and finished 16th among more than 50 teams in the Cambridge Invitational on Dec. 27.

“Due to sickness we had only 11 wrestlers in the Orrville tournament,” coach Scott Toney said. “As a side note, we had a nice turnout of family and friends.”

Mansfield had six champions at Orrville: Angelo Grose (104 lbs.); Levi Hildebrand (134); Jacob Lamb (142); Dylan McCarty (150); Adam Cundiff (205) and Jawaun Irving (245).

Others who placed for Mansfield included: Joshua Lyons, second (98); Caleb Norris, third (160); Malachi Conley, fourth (80) and Baile Lykins, fifth (128).

Six Mansfield Middle School wrestlers competed in the Cambridge Invitational.

“This is one of the elite junior high wrestling tournaments in Ohio with over 50 teams competing,” Toney said. “With just six participants Mansfield finished 16th as a team with three placers.

Jawaun Irving placed second (245), Angelo Grose was sixth (104) and Adam Cundiff was eighth (205). Also competing for the Tygers were Joshua Lyons, Levi Hildebrand and Jacob Lamb.
