86 students featured in strings concert Thursday

"Words and Music of the Civil War" will be the theme of the All-City Spring Strings Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Senior High auditorium.

Orchestra director Alicia Tremmel said 86 Mansfield City Schools students will participate in the free public program in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.

“Mr. Jeff Freytag (band director) and Mr. Charles Bradley (assistant director) have helped me prepare a full orchestra piece for our concert,” Mrs. Tremmel said. “It has been many years since we had a full orchestra at Mansfield Senior.”

Several students of Senior High vocal music director Dirk Eachus will sing with the orchestra. Principal Brad Callender will narrate President Lincoln’s address at Gettysburg to the accompaniment of a video presentation by digital media teacher Mark Morich and his students. Four eighth-graders will read an essay about aspects of the war.

The program also will feature an arrangement for strings students in grades three through 12 written by Mrs. Tremmel’s brother-in-law Steven Kruse, who plays viola in the Toledo Symphony.

Several student ensembles will perform and Mrs. Tremmel will play a violin solo narrated by her husband Michael.
