Rupp Fund, Richland Foundation thanked

Allie Watson of the Richland County Foundation expresses her appreciation to Malabar’s students and staff for the thank-you banner that was displayed during the school’s Math Literacy Night.

Malabar Intermediate School students unfurled a huge banner Tuesday evening to thank the Fran and Warren Rupp Fund and the Richland County Foundation for their “kindness and generosity.”

Last summer the foundation announced that Malabar would receive a $94,162 grant from the Rupp fund, the bulk of it -- $62,000 – for the purchase of a five-year series of Go MATH! textbooks and related materials. The grant also included $25,029 for field trips to destinations that many Malabar students would not otherwise have the opportunity to visit.

The banner displayed in the Malabar cafeteria at the start of Math Literacy Night featured photos taken on the many field trips.

“Our students have benefited so much from all aspects of this grant,” said Assistant Principal Tom Hager, who noted that fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders have participated in unique field trips. “Some visited the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus for a college awareness day. Other trips have included the Cleveland Aquarium, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Ashland University’s Dwight Schar College of Nursing.

“These trips have supported classroom work and state academic standards while stimulating students’ thinking about career interests. We couldn’t have offered these opportunities without the support of the Fran and Warren Rupp Fund and the Richland County Foundation.”

Grant funds also paid for after-school math tutoring by students from Ohio State University-Mansfield, promotion of Malabar’s two Math Literacy Nights during the school year and classroom projectors.

In November the board of education accepted with gratitude an additional $77,621 from the Rupp fund through the foundation to pay for field trips by students at all district buildings.
