Kindergarten requirement: Age 5 by Aug. 1

Children who enter kindergarten in Mansfield City Schools for the 2015-16 school year must be 5 years old before Aug. 1.

At its March meeting the board of education approved the new age deadline, advancing it from the previous date of Sept. 30.

Early entrance to kindergarten may be possible if a student is assessed to be gifted according to state standards. Preschool may be an option for some students who are not 5 years old by Aug. 1.

Parents are urged to register children for the summer Kindergarten Boot Camp. Dates for the camp have not been determined. To register, or for more information, call Linda Neal at the Raemelton administration building at 419-525-6400, extension 0.

Parents or guardians must register children for kindergarten at the school where the child will attend. Anyone unsure of their home school may call 419-525-6400, ext. 56440.

The following documents will be required at registration: child’s birth certificate, immunization record, Social Security number, copy of custody papers if applicable and proof of residency (U.S. mail, utility bill or rental agreement).

Kindergarten screening will occur in the fall after school begins. Screening will include vision, hearing, speech and communication, medical problems and any developmental disorders. Screening will not affect a child’s eligibility to enter kindergarten.
