Student asks community support to attend world conference

A Mansfield Senior High junior is seeking the support of community groups so that he may attend a World Leadership Conference in Chicago next month.

In return, he is willing to commit to community service during the coming school year. Here is his open letter:

June 17, 2015

Hello,

My name is Drew Randall and I will be a junior next year at Mansfield Senior High School. I am a member of National Honor Society and was one of two students selected to represent my school in the Young Leaders Institute during the 2014-2015 school year. More recently, I served as the Mansfield Senior High School Ambassador to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY) at Ohio Northern University.

This four-day conference changed my life. The 200 students representing high schools from the Ohio West region were split into groups and we spent most of our time with these people. Most of us were quiet and reserved before HOBY, but by the end we all had come out of our shells and I met so many amazing people. We listened to speakers and engaged in leadership seminars, as well as participating in community service in Ada, Ohio. Rick Metzger and Alex Sheen were the speakers that stood out to me the most, and I encourage everyone to read about them.

The most amazing thing to me was that every single person there was like me, and I realized that we all can be leaders in our lives and in our communities. I am more positive and more confident in my everyday life, and this will help me to be a better leader in the future.

There is another opportunity for me to build on my HOBY experience as one of 450 participants from around the world at the World Leadership Congress (WLC), which will be held in Chicago July 18-25, 2015. The total cost for registration and transportation is $1775. I have raised $750 to date, and I am now asking for monetary support in any amount from community organizations who value leadership and service to others.

I would welcome the opportunity to come and speak to people within your group about my experiences and my desire to continue to develop my leadership skills. In return for your generous support, I will commit to community service to support your organization in the 2015-2016 school year.

I can be reached at (419) 756-9244 or [email protected] . Please contact me with questions or with details about your next scheduled meeting time. I thank you for your time and consideration of my request.

Sincerely,

Drew Randall
