Sherman Elementary has new assistant principal

Karly Watterson talks with Superintendent Brian Garverick after Tuesday evening’s board of education meeting as Sherman Elementary Principal Stephen Rizzo looks on.

An elementary school teacher from the Northmor Local School District has left the classroom to become the new assistant principal at Sherman Elementary School.

Karly Watterson, 33, received a three-year contract at an annual salary of $57,455 during Tuesday’s board of education meeting. She will begin work on Aug. 1.

“I am really excited about this opportunity,” she said. “I have had a part in many leadership roles but never imagined a principal role. A woman who was an assistant principal in our district kind of pushed me into working in administration.”

Watterson had been a first- and second-grade teacher at Northmor for seven years. She received her bachelor’s degree at Ohio State University, a master’s degree at Mount Vernon Nazarene University and her administrative license from Ashland University. A native of Morrow County, she graduated from Northmor High School.

“There was a big interview committee at Sherman, but they made me feel very welcome,” she said. “Sometimes interviewers will look down at their notebooks most of the time, but they didn’t at Sherman. They were smiling and inviting. I feel ready to do the job there as assistant principal.”

Watterson will work with Sherman Principal Stephen Rizzo. She succeeds Kim Johnson who recently was appointed principal of Woodland Elementary School.
