Cookout, prizes a hit at Woodland Elementary

Bicycle winners at Woodland Elementary on Tuesday were second-grader Elizabeth Rine and first-grader Jalen Crawford.

A studio audience on “The Price is Right” has nothing on Woodland Elementary School students when it comes to excitement and enthusiasm.

Students assembled on the playground cheered, shrieked and applauded for the winners of prizes that followed a cookout on Tuesday sponsored by the district’s food service department. A random drawing determined the prize winners.

First-grader Jalen Crawford and second-grader Elizabeth Rine won the bicycles. Several other students won basketballs, footballs, kick balls, small stuffed animals and other prizes.

The prizes were acquired by food service manager Jane Fortman and assistant manager Lauren Ellsworth by using rebates earned from food-service vendors over the course of the year. Richland Public Health donated bike helmets.

The picnic lunch included hamburgers, baked beans, fresh fruit, an icy fruit cup dessert and white or chocolate milk.

A cookout is planned June 3 at Prospect Elementary and an indoor picnic June 4 at Sherman Elementary. An indoor picnic was held earlier at the Spanish Immersion School.
