Math wizards working numbers magic

Students in one of the galleries at Springmill Learning Center display their “math wizard” caps on the opening day of a weeklong math camp.

Pointed hats made of construction paper were everywhere Monday on the opening day of Mansfield City Schools’ annual math camp at Springmill Learning Center.

“Math Wizards” is the theme of the weeklong program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Ninety-two students are enrolled in the 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. program.

“We want to make it fun while giving kids a little extra help so they can have a strong start to the school year,” sand teacher Meg Strong, camp coordinator.

A variety of math activities will occur in Springmill’s regular classrooms and in its math and science galleries. MCS teachers are assisted by education majors from Ohio State University-Mansfield. Some instruction will be outdoors, weather permitting.

MCS math teacher leaders are assisting in the camp’s operation.

Dr. Terri Bucci, an associate professor of education in OSU’s Department of Teaching and Learning, is conducting math strategies professional development sessions for district math teachers in Springmill’s large meeting room. Those teachers will observe camp instruction this week as part of Bucci’s instruction.

Transportation for students, lunch and a snack are provided daily. Children also will receive math camp T-shirts.
