Bids awarded for demolition of Newman

District Treasurer Robert Kuehnle opens a bid Tuesday afternoon from one of 15 companies for the demolition of the former Newman Elementary School. Recording the bids at right is Harvey Schwager, senior project manager with OHM Advisors of Columbus. OHM wrote the specifications for the bids.

A company from Vickery, Ohio, and another from Toledo have been awarded contracts for the demolition of the former Newman Elementary School.

Total Environmental Services of Toledo submitted a winning bid of $43,450 for hazardous material abatement. Great Lakes Demolition of Vickory had the winning bid of $163,400 for demolition of the building and restoration of the site.

Both bids were approved by the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education Tuesday evening.

Treasurer Robert Kuehnle said the combined bids total of $206,850 was less that half of the $428,000 estimated cost of the abatement and demolition.

“We had really good competition for this project,” Kuehnle told the board. “Forty representatives of prospective bidders participated in a walk-through at Newman on Sept. 13. Fifteen companies submitted bids.

“We checked references for both Total Environmental Services and Great Lakes. They worked together last year on the demolition of Lincoln Elementary School in Ashland.”

Earlier, the Gardner Trane Company removed two Burnham cast iron steam boilers from Newman under a $101,392 contract approved by the board in July and installed them at Springmill STEM Elementary where they are being converted to hot water.

All other usable equipment and materials have been removed from Newman.

Kuehnle told the board plans call for the building to be gone and the site restored by Nov. 7.
