The paintings of these Sherman Elementary first-graders are on display at the Richland Bank branch on North Trimble Road. From left they are Braiden Breneman, Faith Brownfield, Kayleen Backwell and Terrell Robinson.

The artwork of four Sherman Elementary School first-graders went on display Friday at a local branch bank, the first in a year-long showcasing of students’ talents.

Art teacher Deb Woodrum said first-graders have been learning about Jackson Pollock, an American painter whose work in the 1940s and 1950s led the abstract impressionist movement. He was known of his drip style of what he called “action painting.”

“Mr. Pollock would paint on the floor of his barn so he could work all around the four sides and feel like he was actually a part of the painting,” Woodrum said. “Our first-graders spent time last week experiencing this type of painting style while learning about lines.”

The art work of students Braiden Breneman, Faith Brownfield, Kayleen Backwell and Terrell Robinson will hang in the Richland Bank branch on North Trimble Road for a month.

“The first four students chosen to be showcased are in Michelle Noskowiak’s first-grade class. They all took their time with the assignment and found creative ways to apply and move lines around the paper,” Woodrum said.

After a month, Woodrum said, the work of four other students will be displayed at the bank. The rotation will continue throughout the year.

“I have also made arrangements to display our students work at Key Bank on Marion Avenue and am pursuing several other local businesses for permission to display the children’s work,” she said. “This will be a year-long showcasing of their talents.”
