The Spanish
Immersion School and two Mansfield City Schools Board of Education members were
recognized Wednesday evening during the spring conference of the Central Region
of the Ohio School Boards Association. Spanish Immersion was honored “as an outstanding school based on state or national recognition for exceptional success educating students.”
In 2018
Spanish Immersion was named a National Blue Ribbon School while again earning a
School of Promise designation from the Ohio Department of Education.
Previously, the state recognized the school as a High Performing School of
Honor.
Principal Gabe Costa attended the conference at the Villa Milano on Schrock Road. He was joined by fifth-grade teacher Leigh Kelly, fourth-grade teacher Alejandro Gil Palacios and kindergarten teachers Joyce Segura and Marta Pradillos Garcia.
Spanish
Immersion opened in 2007 with a kindergarten class of 11. It now has an
enrollment of approximately 250 in kindergarten through eighth grade and is
recognized as an International Spanish Academy by the government of Spain.
Board of education president Renda Cline received the OSBA Award of Achievement, which OSBA said “represents a desire to go above and beyond the regular duties of a school board member and demonstrates a commitment to continuing education. Your effort and dedication have benefited the students, families and community members of the Mansfield City Schools.”
Ms. Cline is
in her eighth year on the board. She also served as president during the
four-year period from 2014 to 2017.
Board member
Chris Elswick, who was first elected to the board in 2009, was recognized for
10 years of service to Mansfield City Schools. Earlier in his tenure Mr.
Elswick served as board president.
