Senior High offers free tutoring for state test

Winston Greene, Mansfield City Schools testing coordinator, looks over the assessment calendar for the coming school year.

Free after-school tutoring is available to Mansfield Senior High School students in preparation for the five-part Ohio Graduation Test.

Certified teachers offer the tutoring from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Subjects and locations are: reading, room 2101; mathematics, room 2113; writing, room 2413; science, room 1324, and social studies, room 1323.

“This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who needs assistance to prepare for the OGT,” said Winston Greene, Mansfield City Schools testing coordinator.

“Some students won’t raise their hands in class to ask a question for fear that others will think they aren’t smart. The tutoring sessions, depending on numbers, offer more of a one-on-one opportunity to ask questions and understand material.”

Students also can study the format of OGT questions and review previous tests released by the Ohio Department of Education. None of the material contains the questions that will be on the 2014-15 test.

Passing the OGT applies to sophomores, juniors, seniors and students who are repeating the ninth grade. New freshmen – the Class of 2018 – will not take the OGT; in addition to course credits required for graduation, they will take end-of-course exams in English I and II, algebra 1, geometry, integrated math I and II, physical science, American history and American government..

Senior High students who have yet to pass the OGT – except those on Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) – will take the tests Oct. 27-31 at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center, 890 W. Fourth St. The 2 and ½-hour tests will be administered on the following schedule: Monday, reading, Tuesday, mathematics; Wednesday, writing; Thursday, science, and Friday, social studies.

Students on IEPs will remain at Senior High and be allowed to use as much of the day as needed to complete each part of the test.

The OGT will be administered again in March and June.
