Mrs. Whaley

English Language Arts- Mrs. Whaley

I am Mrs. Whaley, one of the 5th grade Language Arts teachers.  I have been teaching for 20 years. I spent 1 year subbing in Shelby City Schools, and for 19 years I have been a part of the Mansfield City School. I have taught kindergarten, first grade, a year of eighth grade, and now 5th grade.

I got my bachelor’s and master’s degree at The Ohio State University.  I can teach all subjects in kindergarten through eighth grade. I have always wanted to be a teacher. I love seeing the joy in my student’s faces when they learn something new.

I was born in Mansfield, but graduated from Shelby High School in 1993. I played the clarinet in high school and marched in the Electrical parade at the Magic Kingdom when I was a Freshman. That is when my love of Disney began.  I love spoiling and spending time with my two nephews, traveling with my family, watching Ohio State football, and relaxing at home.

Mrs. Stoyko

Math- Mrs. Stoyko

Hi! My name is Mrs. Stoyko.  I am a 5th grade Math teacher at Malabar.  I have been teaching in the Mansfield City Schools for 28 years.  I graduated from Lexington High School and Bowling Green State University.  I have also taught Extended Day Kindergarten, Reading Recovery, Kindergarten and First grade.  I have taught at Carpenter, Sherman, Woodland, Brinkerhoff and here at Malabar. I love teaching Math!

I am married to my husband David.  We have 3 daughters. The oldest is in graduate school to become an Occupational Therapist.  The middle daughter just graduated from Bowling Green State University and is a nurse. The youngest is a junior at Bowling Green State University majoring in nursing.  We have 3 dogs.  Chloe is our older dog and we got two puppies in March that are sisters named Emmie and Callie.

In my spare time I love to read, shop and spend time with my family. Our favorite place to go on vacation is Sanibel Island.

Mrs. Pohlabel

Science and Social Studies- Mrs. Pohlabel

Hi! I’m Shannon Pohlabel and I teach 5th grade social studies and science. I grew up in the rural village of Lucas and graduated in 1995. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Ashland University in 2001. In that same year I began my teaching career for Mansfield City Schools. I have taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and a 4/5 split class.  Over the years, I have taught at Newman, Hedges, Prospect, Springmill, and Malabar. Teaching science is my favorite subject!

I am married to my husband Dave of 21 years, and have two silly children, Nick, who is a freshman in high school and Julia who is a 3rd grader.

In my spare time I love gardening, being out in nature, spending time with family, decorating, and trying new foods.

I feel very honored to be a TYger of over 20 years  and love working with the students and staff of Malabar!

Mrs. Curtis

Intervention Specialist- Mrs. Curtis

Lisa Curtis has been teaching in the Mansfield City Schools for the past 14 years and will begin her 30th year teaching in the fall of 2020.  Currently, she is a 5th-grade Intervention Specialist at Malabar.  She’s taught students in all grades from 4th to 12th.  Not only has Ms. Curtis worked as a special-education teacher, but also as a regular-education teacher at the middle-school level.  She graduated from Walsh College and Ashland University.  Lisa is a proud mom of two talented, extraordinary kids; a son & a daughter.  She was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA.  When not teaching, her favorite place to be is her home in Mansfield or at her cabin near the Allegheny National Forest.  Ms. Curtis has a cat and a dog and is trying to adopt another dog because she just loves her furry friends!  For fun, she enjoys doing things outside like gardening, hiking, biking & geo-caching or quiet things indoors like reading & listening to music.  Most people who know Lisa describe her as out-going, but she’s really a very introverted person.  According to Ms. Curtis, the best students to teach are 5th-graders.  She’s very much looking forward to another great year at Malabar Intermediate School.
