English Course Offerings


Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, 3500
Grade 12
Credit: 1 Weight: 1.5
Prerequisite: English 11 Honors or approval of the English Department
The summer project must be successfully completed by the deadline in order to be listed on the class roster for the fall quarter.

Students are required to take the AP exam in the spring. The goal is a high score on the AP exam, enabling students to receive credit for freshman English courses in college.  AP classes are made up of highly skilled and highly motivated students who want an extra challenge in their senior year and are serious about reading and analyzing the works of famous British authors in formal essay and research formats.

Students will read selections of classical and contemporary world literature. Students will write responses to the form and content of short works of fiction. Formal writing receives special emphasis. Portfolio writing will be included in this course. Research skills will be introduced.

This course is structured for the college-bound student. Students will read selections of classical and contemporary world literature. Students will write responses to the form and content of short works of fiction. Formal grammar receives special emphasis.

This course is designed for the development of analytical skills in literature and technical skills in expository writing. The readings will put emphasis on the American classics, and the writing will culminate in a research paper. Students will purchase paperback books for this course. There will be a homework assignment each night.
 
College Prep English 12, 3450

In this course, formal essays of many varieties will be taught, including the MLA research paper. Students will read, discuss, and write about poems, short stories, novels, and plays of British literature. There will be homework most nights, and students will need to purchase several paperback books. Students completing this course will be able to directly enter a non-remedial freshman English course at a four-year college.

Students are selected for honors classes through a multi-criteria assessment that includes:

This course is designed as an accelerated introduction to high school English. Grammar, literature, research skills, and writing assignments are designed to provide students with the background necessary to participate in advanced English courses. Students taking this course may be required to purchase some paperback books. The course is designed for students interested in enrolling in Advanced Placement English in their senior year of high school. There will be a summer reading requirement.

This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth study of American Literature. Special emphasis is placed on the literary analysis essay and on the MLA formatted research paper. Students taking this course will be required to purchase several paperback books. This course leads up to the Advanced Placement English course in the senior year. There is a summer reading requirement for English 11 Honors. There will be a homework assignment each night.

Prerequisite: Tech College Prep English, College Prep English 11, or English 11 Honors

This class teaches specifically to the career technical student. There is an emphasis on technical reading and writing. The writing will progress from the paragraph to the MLA research paper using the writing process. Problems of sentence structure will specifically be addressed. Students will experience interpretation of readings of a non-remedial freshman English credit at NCSC in the Tech-Prep programs.

Gothic and Horror Literature 3650

Authors studied in this course will include both contemporary and classic authors such as Hawthorne, Shelley, Poe, and Stephen King. Topics of study connected to these works and authors will include the psychology of horror, why we like to be scared, how the genre has evolved to what it is today, etc.

Mythology is used as a reference in many pieces of literature, being a basis for reading understanding. Students will read many mythological stories, studying the gods and goddesses, heroes, creatures, and places of Ancient Greece and Rome and other cultures. Students will become familiar with word roots and bases to help enlarge vocabulary.

Newspaper Staff 3650

This is a course that is devoted to writing and producing the school newspaper. Instructional materials are used to teach basic journalistic skills. The staff decides the content of each issue, written articles, solicits the advertising, and distributes the final product.

OGT Intervention 100

OGT Intervention provides individualized instruction for students needing to pass one or more sections of the OGT, with seniors having priority enrollment.

This course covers all types of poetry and poets. Students will become familiar with the literary terms and conventions specific to poetry. Students will have the opportunity to write their own poetry and publish it, as well as read a variety of types of poets.

Students will be placed in this class based on OAA scores and recommendations from teachers.

This course uses the Read 180 program which is a computer-based program that uses small-group format. It covers the basic skills of reading as an intervention for both fiction and non-fiction selections. Students will do writing and discussion about their reading.

This course is designed to aide students in areas of written communication in which they may have the greatest practical need. The course includes accurate observation and recording of details; summarizing what one reads; developing organizational skills; recognizing appropriate uses of formal and informal writing; reviewing basic grammar skills and sentence structure; developing basic paragraphs; and writing business letters and other applications.

This is a project-based course designed to help the student improve skills needed to interpret and extend meaning in both fiction and non-fiction. Students will read, discuss, and write about all types of written, electronic, and visual media. Projects are planned to capitalize on student strengths and learning styles. Novels, short stories, poetry, plays, magazines, and newspapers will be used in this course.

Reading Foundations II*

This course is an extension of Foundations of Reading I and is designed to help the students use their interpretive skills to do more in-depth studies of written materials.
 
Shakespeare*, 3760

Prerequisite: Passed both Reading and Writing sections of OGT

This course includes the history and customs of Elizabethan England and the life of William Shakespeare. It will include a study of Shakespeare's sonnets and several plays not covered in other classes. Students should have a strong desire to read aloud and possibly do some acting, as well as reading silently and writing. 

Technical College Prep English
Grade: 11

Prerequisite: English 10, College Prep English 10, or Honors 10 English
 
This course will provide students experience in expository writing. Students will master paragraph writing as well as develop skills in essay writing. Also included will be reading and analysis of literature from American authors. Students successfully completing this course would expect to have demonstrated the competencies required to enter directly into a non-remedial freshmen English course at a two-year technical college. Student competency may be demonstrated through portfolio assessment or similar technique.

This course is designed to help students in the area of written communication. Students will do narrative and expository writings, letters, persuasive compositions, and informal writing. Students will be guided through the writing process; and emphasis will be on content, organization, language (formal grammar), and writing conventions. Students will learn research skills using multiple resources.
