Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, 3500

Students are required to take the AP exam in the spring. The goal is a high score on the AP exam, enabling students to receive credit for freshman English courses in college. AP classes are made up of highly skilled and highly motivated students who want an extra challenge in their senior year and are serious about reading and analyzing the works of famous British authors in formal essay and research formats.

Students completing this course will be able to directly enter a non-remedial freshman English course at a four-year college.

This course is designed as an accelerated introduction to high school English. This class teaches specifically to the career technical student. There is an emphasis on technical reading and writing. The writing will progress from the paragraph to the MLA research paper using the writing process. Problems of sentence structure will specifically be addressed. Students will experience interpretation of readings of a non-remedial freshman English credit at NCSC in the Tech-Prep programs.
Gothic and Horror Literature 3650

Authors studied in this course will include both contemporary and classic authors such as Hawthorne, Shelley, Poe, and Stephen King. Topics of study connected to these works and authors will include the psychology of horror, why we like to be scared, how the genre has evolved to what it is today, etc.

Mythology is used as a reference in many pieces of literature, being a basis for reading understanding. Students will read many mythological stories, studying the gods and goddesses, heroes, creatures, and places of Ancient Greece and Rome and other cultures. Students will become familiar with word roots and bases to help enlarge vocabulary.

This is a course that is devoted to writing and producing the school newspaper. Instructional materials are used to teach basic journalistic skills. The staff decides the content of each issue, written articles, solicits the advertising, and distributes the final product.

This course uses the Read 180 program which is a computer-based program that uses small-group format. It covers the basic skills of reading as an intervention for both fiction and non-fiction selections. Students will do writing and discussion about their reading.

This course is designed to aide students in areas of written communication in which they may have the greatest practical need. The course includes accurate observation and recording of details; summarizing what one reads; developing organizational skills; recognizing appropriate uses of formal and informal writing; reviewing basic grammar skills and sentence structure; developing basic paragraphs; and writing business letters and other applications.

Novels, short stories, poetry, plays, magazines, and newspapers will be used in this course.

This course includes the history and customs of Elizabethan England and the life of William Shakespeare. It will include a study of Shakespeare's sonnets and several plays not covered in other classes. Students should have a strong desire to read aloud and possibly do some acting, as well as reading silently and writing.
Technical College Prep English

This course will provide students experience in expository writing. Students will master paragraph writing as well as develop skills in essay writing. Also included will be reading and analysis of literature from American authors. Students successfully completing this course would expect to have demonstrated the competencies required to enter directly into a non-remedial freshmen English course at a two-year technical college. Student competency may be demonstrated through portfolio assessment or similar technique.
