Advanced Placement Biology is for students intensely interested in college preparatory work that will prepare them for a science major/career after completion of a post-secondary program. The topics and laboratory experiences cover the eight themes identified by the college board. These experiences will provide an unequaled depth and range of current topics and underlying principles that comprise the biological foundations of the basic allied life and health sciences. The course will teach the current biomolecular basics that provided the thematic underpinnings of such areas as: Pharmacy, Dentistry, Biotechnology, Nursing, Veterinary and Medical Science.


An independent science research project is required.  A summer study project is required.  Students participating in an AP course or a Career Technical course that has an exam as part of their criteria are required to take the exam. Passage of the exam is not a requirement to pass the course.
 
Anatomy and Physiology I, 7300

Anatomy and Physiology I emphasizes both the structure and function of the human body. It includes the study of histology and identification of tissue; the integumentary system; the skeletal system; muscular system; nervous system as well as the somatic and special senses. Cat dissection with an emphasis on lab practical tests is required as well as many other labs to reinforce content. 
 
Anatomy and Physiology II, 7310
Grades: 11,12

Prerequisite: Biology or Honors Biology


Anatomy and Physiology II is a continuation of Anatomy and Physiology II. We pick up with visceral anatomy including the respiratory system, digestive system, cardio-vascular system, immune system, urogenital and reproductive systems. Again, dissection and lab practical tests are required as well as many other labs to reinforce content. Both Anatomy and Physiology I and II also will include supplemental reading assignments as well as research to enhance the topics covered. 

AP Chemistry, 7500
Grade: 11,12
Credit 1 Weight Factor: 1.5
Prerequisite: Honors Chemistry
 
This is an advanced chemistry course that covers chemical equilibrium, oxidation-reduction reactions, gas laws, thermodynamics, atomic structure, reaction mechanisms, chemical analysis, and identification and reactions of carbon compounds. This course is recommended for any student who intends to pursue a scientifically oriented college program. Emphasis on math and theory as related to the physical and chemical properties of particles is included in both lecture and laboratory investigation.  Safety goggles and written records of laboratory work are required.


Students participating in an AP course are required to take the AP Exam. Passage of the exam is not required to pass the course.

Biology is for students who intend to pursue a 2-year associate degree, or a 4-year non-science post secondary degree. This lab-based course covers biological topics in preparation for the Ohio Graduation Test. Topics include: ecology, the nature of science, taxonomy, natural selection, microscopy, cell structure, inorganic and organic chemistry, genetics, and a comprehensive study of the 6 biological kingdoms.

Chemistry, 7450

This chemistry course is intended for students who plan to pursue a two-year technical or four-year college non-science program. It is a laboratory oriented course that covers energy, classification, composition of matter and chemical reactions. Safety goggles and a written record of laboratory work are required.

Environmental Science, 7400

Environmental Science is a 1 semester class designed to take the pure science of Ecology and transfer it to applied science so students gain insights into many of the current environmental problems and what they can do to help solve them. Some of the topics covered are water and air pollution, land and its mis-uses, renewable and nonrenewable resources, alternative energy supplies and the steps to a sustainable society. This class includes many labs as well as problem-solving activities.

Honors Biology, 7180
Grades: 10,11,12

Honor's Biology is an accelerated course for students who wish to prepare to pursue a college major in science or related areas. This course includes all of the same topics as biology, but at a more in-depth study. It also emphasizes lab skills that are essential for success in college.

Honors Chemistry, 7480

Prerequisite: Honors Biology
 
It is strongly recommended that Algebra 2 with Trigonometry Honors be completed or taken concurrently.

Honors Chemistry is presented from a theoretical basis using inquiry, research, mathematics, and logic. It includes classification of matter and energy, behavior of matter, chemical reactions, gas laws, and atomic structure. The course is intended for the student who intends to pursue further science studies.  Safety goggles and a written record of laboratory work are required.

An independent science research project is required.

Honors Physical and Earth Science, 7130
Grades: 9

Prerequisite: Recommendation from previous science teacher

Honors Physical and Earth Science is an accelerated coure recommended for students who wish to prepare for advanced high school science or pursue a college major in science or related areas. This course will place emphasis on Ohio's Ninth Grade Content Area Standards as it applies to the tenth grade OGT. Topics covered, but not limited to include scientific method, atomic structure, acids and bases, chemical reactions, geological time scale, fossils and the rock record, plate tectonics, sun, newtons laws, and the electromagnetic spectrum. Course work will be reinforced with laboratory investigations.

Introduction to Chemistry*, 7430

Introduction to Chemistry is a semester class that extends Physical Science I basic principles of chemistry. Students explore atomic structure; physical and chemical properties; heat transfer; design and use of the periodic table; chemical reactions; chemical bonds; electron orbital shapes and filling orders; and spectral line analysis of elements. It is intended for students who need a physical science credit for graduation, but do not intend to take a full year of chemistry. A laboratory notebook may be required.

Introduction to Physics, a semester course, is an extension of Physical Science I, exploring basic principles fundamental to physics. Topics include: the position and motion of objects; motion and forces; light; heat; electricity and magnetism; energy transfers and conservation of energy. It is intended for students who need a physical science credit for graduation, but do not intend to take a full year of physics. A laboratory notebook may be required.

Microbiology, 7320

Microbiology is a 1 semester class for college bound students planning on a possible major in the health or life science areas as well as in the environmental science areas. This lab based course investigates the anatomy and physiology of the world of microorganisms as well as their impact on our world. Included will be the development of microbiology, the tools of a microbiologist and how to use them as well as the systematic study of bacteria, viruses, protozoa, algae, molds and yeast. We will also cover the ecology of infectious disease and a unit on Bioterrorism.

Physical/ Earth & Space Science, 7120
Grades: 9,10,11,12

This introduction to Physical and Earth & Space Science course is designed to meet the outcomes 5 through 11 of the O.G.T. For science. Topics covered may include, but are not limited to, the nature of science, lab safety, properties and behavior of matter, forces and their effect on motion, processes and cycles occurring on and in the earth, astronomy, and natural resources.

Physics, 7550
Grades: 12 (11 with instructors permission)
Credit: 1 Weight factor: 1.5
Prerequisite: Algebra II, Geometry, or Honors Geometry or Algebra II and Trig. Honors, or may be taken concurrently with Math Analysis.
 
This is a rigorous pursuit of fundamental concepts of physics and includes a study of light, optics, kinematics, wave motion, vectors, dynamics, energy transfers, electricity and magnetism. The course is lab oriented. Physics is a quantitative study of physical phenomena developed by a logical inquiry approach. It is highly recommended that Trigonometry, College Math, or Calculus be taken concurrently with Physics.  A Texas Instruments TI-82 or TI-83 graphing calculator and a written record of laboratory work are required in the the course.  An independent science research project is required.

Practical Physics, 7600
Grade(s): 11,12 Career Technical Students

This course is designed to give the career technical student a practical understanding of science principles as they apply to technology. Applications to realistic situations are demonstrated through discussions and lab experiments designed to benefit students who are planning a career in a technical field.
