Advanced Placement American History, 4280

Prerequisite: Recommendation of teachers and counselors
Students participating in an AP course or a Career Technical course that has an exam as part of their criteria are required to take the exam. Passage of the exam is not a requirement to pass the course, but is a requirement to receive credit. There is a required summer reading and essay assignment.
AP American History will cover the period of U.S. History from colonization to the present. Students will have the opportunity to read historical material at a college level. They will be expected to analyze historical evidence, interpret, and arrive at conslusions. Emphasis will be placed on independent reading, study, and essay writing.
AP American History will provide the general framework for those students who may wish to take the Advanced Placement Examination. Successful performance on this test could qualify the student for credit and for advanced placement in a given college or university.

This is a semester course and is recommended for Juniors and Seniors who have not passed the Social Studies OGT. The course focuses on the historical period from 1750 to present day. Events from this period will be studied from both an American and world perspective. Integrated History can be repeated once for credit.

This semester course will introduce the student to the American system of justice and is recommended for students interested in a law-related career. The curriculum will provide a basic understanding of criminal and civil law and the judicial system. Topics will include the rights of the accused, constitutional issues as they relate to the judicial system, and the role of the police and the courts.

AP European History will explore the intellectual, cultural, political, diplomatic, social, and economic history of modern Europe (1450-present). Students in this course will analyze and interpret historical evidence and draw conclusions about its impact on modern society. Additionally, a major emphasis will be put on developing writing, independent reading, and study skills.
AP European History will provide an opportunity for those students seeking to take the AP European History Examination. This course will provide students with an understanding of microeconomic and macroeconomic prinicples including marketing, pricing, supply and demand, competition, and the government’s role in the economy. It will also introduce students to their roles as consumers.

Geography is designed to give students the knowledge of geographic locations, patterns and processes to show the interrelationship between the physical environment and human activity, and to explain the interactions that occur in an increasingly interdependent world. The course will also focus on today’s global economics, politics, social values, ideology and culture.

These events will be studied from both American and world perspectives. Events/topics to be studied will include, but are not limited to, the Enlightenment, revolutions around the world, the Industrial Revoluion, the rise of nationalism, the unification of Italy and Germany, imperialism, and Progressivism.

Events/topics to be studied will include, but are not limited to, World War I, the Harlem Renaissance, the Roaring Twenties, the Interwar Period, World War II, the Cold War, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and terrorism.

This is a semester course and is recommended for the college-bound student. During the semester, students will study the federal system, political parties, voting procedures, state and local governments, the branches of government, and current economic, political, foreign, and global policy and issues. Students will also be expeceted to analyze and interpret major documents. This course also requires two outside readings from the NY Times Bestsellers List, one research paper on Volunteerims with a minimum of twenty hours of documented community service, and a second research paper of the teacher’s choosing. Honors American Government has a required summer assignment.

This is a semester course that will allow students the opportunity to actively participate in the judicial system. The course will provide the foundation for an operational understanding of court room practices and procuders and is highly recommended for students interested in pursuing a legal career. Students are required to participate in the Ohio Mock Trial Competition. This course may be repeated for credit.

This course is recommended for college-bound students. It is designed to promote a better understanding of our national, state, and local governments. Students will gain an understanding of legal, historical, and philosophical foundations of the American political system. This course will also focus on the office of the President and the executive branch, the United States Congress and the legislative branch, and the Supreme Court and the judicial branch. Students will also be introduced to the structure, functions, and operations of the state and local governments.
