Woodland students honor veterans with a musical salute

Music teacher Douglas Lizak leads Woodland Elementary first-graders in a rousing rendition of “Yankee Doodle Boy.”

The program was three days early this year but Woodland Elementary School kept up its tradition of a colorful, musical Veterans Day salute Friday afternoon.

Before the first number, music director Douglas Lizak asked veterans in the audience to stand and said students had worked hard preparing to honor them.

“This program is their gift to you,” he said.

Kindergarten children led off by waving small American flags during their “Stars and Stripes Flag Routine,” followed by first-graders singing “Yankee Doodle Boy.”

Lizak directed the second grade in singing “Proud of our Veterans,” and third-graders singing “Oh I Love America” with featured soloist Aaliyah Timmer.

Student speakers between songs included Alexa Kauffman, R’Jeanleena Wiggins and Nataliah Thompson.

The program concluded with all grades joining to sing “Grand Old Flag.”
