New employees tour the district on the 'big yellow limousine'

Human resources director Mark Wilcheck addresses new Mansfield City Schools employees in the Senior High library.

Thirty-five new employees of Mansfield City Schools began learning their way around the district Wednesday during the first of two orientation days.

Mark Wilcheck, director of human resources, moderated the opening session in the Mansfield Senior High library, where new teachers and support staff were welcomed by Superintendent Stan Jefferson and other central office administrators.

Renda Cline, president of the board of education, and board member Sheryl Weber, a retired district teacher and administrator, also greeted the new hires.

“We have turned the corner on state testing,” said Stephen Rizzo, chief academic officer. “We need you to help us keep that momentum.”

The group heard from technology director Fayette Adams before boarding a bus for a tour of the district.

“You’re going to take a ride on the big yellow limousine,” Wilcheck said with a smile. “I want you all to know where our schools are. I don’t anyone to say later, ‘I don’t know where Prospect Elementary is’ or ‘I didn’t know there was a Malabar Intermediate School.’”

The bus tour ended downtown at the carrousel where those who wanted were treated to a ride. After lunch on their own new employees returned to the Senior High library for an afternoon session during which treasurer Robert Kuehnle and his staff explained payroll and benefits.

On Thursday the group will meet from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center, 890 W. Fourth St.  Among the sessions will be a presentation by Brad Strong, president of the Mansfield School Employees Association.

On Friday the human resources department will have an orientation session for substitute teachers from 8 to 9:30 at the Raemelton administration building. A second orientation session, this one for substitute support staff, is set for 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Raemelton.
