Superintendent: Lesson packets are schoolwork, not homework
lunch TuesdayJackie Shaffer, a security specialist at Malabar Intermediate School, and Joe Cline, a security specialist at Woodland Elementary, prepare to distribute sack lunches and the next day’s breakfasts at Malabar on Tuesday.

Volunteers continue to distribute food this week during Mansfield City Schools’ scheduled spring break.

Sack lunches along with the next day’s breakfasts are handed out each weekday from 12 to 1 p.m. at Mansfield Senior High, Malabar Intermediate School and Springmill STEM Elementary School. The distribution will continue as long as schools are closed.

Monday will mark the start of the final week of at-home lessons for each grade as part of the district’s second packet. Schools have not been open since March 16.

Governor Dewine’s current school closing order extends through May 1, so teachers will prepare a third packet for the week of April 27-May 1. Pickup dates and hours will be announced next week.

If the governor extends school closings beyond May 1, additional lesson packets will be provided.

Superintendent Stan Jefferson emphasized this week that the lesson packets are not homework; they are schoolwork.

“Homework supplements daily classroom instruction but we currently have no face-to-face instruction,” Jefferson said. “The lesson packets are schoolwork. They take the place of being in the classroom.

“It is important that lessons be completed and returned.”

Drop-off boxes for completed packets will be installed at each building later this week.
