One of four
groups of students who met their yearlong reading goal celebrate in the Sherman
Elementary library. Sherman Elementary students spent the entire school year under the sea – at least in terms of their reading.
The oceanic theme is displayed throughout the school and on a huge bulletin board at the main entrance where students were urged to “Dive into reading 100 books.” Two hundred and fifty-five of them met that goal.
Some reading was done at school, some at home. As books were finished they were carefully documented in students’ reading logs.
Library
media paraprofessional Robin Burkhardt divided the 255 goal achievers into four
groups for separate library celebrations on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“I’m very proud of them for sticking to their reading and meeting their goal,” Burkhardt said. “The fun things we are doing here in the library are a reward for their reading.”
All 255 students wore light blue T-shirts which proclaimed “100 books. Whale of a reader.” The shirts were provided by the Gorman Rupp Co.
At each
library celebration Burkhardt was assisted by third-grader leadership team
members who manned several activity stations. Celebrating students participated
in a shells-in-a-bucket relay or attempting to tape fins on a large paper fish
while blindfolded.
At one
station students bounced off a small trampoline to leap over paper jellyfish.
“The third-graders thought of that one. Pretty cool,” Burkhardt said.
At other sites in the library students worked on creating paper fish or “fishing” for prizes in a bucket. Everyone had their pictures taken while looking out from a paper shark’s mouth.
Small treat
bags included popcorn, pretzels and Goldfish crackers.
