Grandparents kept coming and coming to breakfast at Woodland

Tables were filled with students and their grandparents Friday morning in the gymnasium at Woodland Elementary School.

The turnout for Woodland Elementary School’s annual grandparents breakfast Friday morning may have been largest ever.

“It’s awesome,” Principal Kim Johnson said while she distributed napkins to students and adults as they neared the serving line for doughnuts, juice and coffee.

Doors to the gymnasium opened at 8:40 a.m. and the event was scheduled to end by 9:15 a.m. At 9:05 a.m. visitors still were coming in.

“Usually by this time everyone is seated,” Johnson said. “I believe this may be the largest turnout ever. It’s wonderful to have so many grandparents here with our students.

“It’s a beautiful morning. I’m glad we do this early in the year when the weather is nice.”

The crowd included one pair of great-grandparents, ages 89 and 92.

Teachers moved around the tables, greeting their students and talking with adults.

Secretary Vanessa Hindman said the grandparents breakfasts – and in the past luncheons – have been a Woodland tradition “for at least 20 years.”
