National Honor Society inducts new members

Sixteen new members were inducted into National Honor Society during a candlelight program at Mansfield Senior High School Wednesday evening.

Inductees include seniors Jalana Giesman and Moriah Corley and juniors Lacey Edwards, Makaylia Cartee and Dakoda Addington.

Sophomore inductees are Shamari Allen, Sidney Caudill, Steven Howell, Shandon Kiah, Matthew Lyons, Dacine Melton, Breyon Mills, Jayden Schepflin, Brice Schultz, Keeley Weese and Courtney Worthington.

Keynote speaker was Becky Medina, a 1993 Senior High graduate and former member of National Honor Society. She urged the inductees to “dream big, think out of the box and make an impact on the world.”

Medina earned a degree in journalism from Ohio State University. After working at a newspaper for several years she participated in a number of mission trips, including serving at an orphanage in Jamaica and, last year, teaching English in Kenya. She currently works with Serving Our Neighbors, an organization that teachers English as a second language to newer residents of Columbus.

There are 51 National Honor Society members at Senior High. The officers, all seniors, are: Alexia Kemerling, president; Kiasha Franklin, vice president; Sarah Voelp, treasurer; Thea Crowley, secretary, and Sophia McCourt, public relations.

Sheryl Weber, a member of the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education and a retired social studies teacher at Senior High, worked with Robert Watson as co-advisers of National Honor Society this year. Watson will continue as the sole adviser next year.

The four pillars of National Honor Society membership are scholarship, service, leadership and character. Established in 1921, National Honor Society has more than 1 million members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
