Woodland principal longtime district educator

Kim Johnson is shown during the 2014-15 school year with Jason Douglas, center, interim principal of the Hedges Campus, and Robert McQuate, middle school assistant principal.

The new principal of Woodland Elementary School is a veteran educator in Mansfield City Schools.

Kim Johnson, most recently the assistant principal at Sherman Elementary School, got the Woodland job Tuesday evening as the board of education approved Superintendent Brian Garverick’s recommendation for her hiring.

“I am honored and eager to work with the Woodland staff,” said Johnson, who succeeds the retiring Renee Bessick.

Johnson is a native of Jamestown, N.Y. She graduated from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania before earning her master’s degree from Ashland University.

Johnson taught for two years in Hyattsville, Md., before coming to Mansfield City Schools. Her 15-year tenure here has included teaching kindergarten, first and second grades. She also is a certified Reading Recovery teacher and has served as a literacy coordinator and coach.

“My hope is that we continue to improve in academics and discipline and build on the successes we already have,” she told the Mansfield News Journal.

In other action, the board accepted the resignations of Brad Callender, principal of Mansfield Senior High School, and Jason Goings, principal of Mansfield Middle School.

Goings is moving to Ashland High School, where he will serve as assistant principal and athletic director. Callender has not announced his plans.

The board will meet in special sessions at 5 p.m. on June 24 to review applications for district treasurer and at 8 a.m. on June 30 to act on routine fiscal year-end matters. The next regular meeting will be at 5 p.m. on July 21. All meetings will be at the Raemelton administration building, 856 W. Cook Road.
