Board will name its meeting room for Lowell Smith

The Mansfield City Schools Board of Education will dedicate its meeting room in honor of the late Lowell T. Smith at the start of its 5 p.m. meeting on Tuesday, April 21, at the Raemelton administration building, 856 W. Cook Road.

Mr. Smith, who died in January, served the district for more than 30 years as a teacher, coach, administrator and member of the board of education.

Superintendent Brian Garverick will join Mr. Smith’s widow, Jan, and other members of his family to display a plaque that will be placed in the board room. The plaque, which bears Mr. Smith’s picture and a brief biography, includes the inscription “Student achievement was his unwavering passion and the focus of his lifelong work.”

The board then will read and adopt a resolution naming the room for Mr. Smith in recognition of his long service to the district.

Also on the agenda is board approval of several retirements, including treasurer Rosetta Stephens (Sept. 1) and Woodland Elementary Principal Renee Bessick (July 1).

Jen Lepard, president of the Mansfield School Employees Association, will outline plans for a community Celebration of Education from 5 to 8 p.m. on May 1 in the Mansfield Senior High School commons.
