Ready, Set, Read camps are underway

Teacher Keri Loughry works with two students from a group of five Tuesday morning during the “Ready, Set, Read” camp at Prospect Elementary School.

It’s the middle of summer but there’s a lot of reading and writing going on at Prospect and Sherman elementary schools.

Mansfield City Schools’ “Ready, Set, Read” camps opened Monday at both schools. Enrolled children will attend from 9 to 11:45 a.m. each weekday except Friday through Aug. 4.

“Lessons are built around a primary literacy framework,” said Keri Loughry, a first-grade teacher at Prospect. “The children are reading and writing independently. They also are reading aloud and participating in shared reading.”

Lessons are structured as part of the Literacy Collaborative, a long-standing teaching strategies partnership between Mansfield City Schools and Ohio State University in Columbus.

Kim Agler also is teaching at the Prospect camp. Camp teachers at Sherman are Jamie Zellner, Kathy Kranch, Tabetha Ramey and Lucinda Edgell.

Transportation and snacks are provided to camp participants. Those who have perfect attendance at all 12 sessions will receive prizes.
