Rally on the square Wednesday evening; MCS schools closed Friday

A community pep rally in downtown Mansfield Wednesday evening will send the Mansfield Senior High Tygers and the Lucas Cubs to their state championship football games this week.

The 7 p.m. rally on Mansfield’s downtown square will be hosted by Mansfield Mayor Tim Theaker and Lucas Mayor Todd Hall.

Players, coaches, bands and cheerleaders from both schools will be featured.

The Tygers (13-1) will meet Trotwood-Madison (11-3) at 3 p.m. Friday for the Div. III state title. The Cubs (12-2) will square off against Maria Stein Marion Local (12-2) at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Div. VII championship match.

Both games will be in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium at Canton.

In a statement to staff and parents on Monday, Superintendent Stan Jefferson announced that Mansfield City Schools will be closed on Friday. Here is his statement:

“Mansfield City Schools will be closed Friday to allow maximum district support for our Senior High Tygers when they meet Trotwood-Madison for the Div. III state football championship.

“The game is set for 3 p.m. in the Hall of Fame Stadium at Canton. The afternoon kickoff negates an early release.

“By announcing the closing now fans who plan to attend the game will be able to order tickets and make safe travel plans. Parents and guardians who must work Friday will have time to arrange child care as needed.

“Friday’s championship game is an historic milestone for the Tyger football program. The entire Mansfield community shares our pride in the team’s achievement.
